Bright, shiny objects, cool blues and greens, glowing reds, firey oranges; humans have used a variety of materials to make jewelry for thousands of years. Jewelry is more than cold, hard metal or colorful pebbles. With human intervention, it is transformed into something beautiful.
I often form silver and/or gold into interesting shapes and see how the piece evolves from there. Or the color or shape of a particular gemstone will catch my eye and I will build something around it. By constantly shifting elements around, the piece takes a final form. I like strong silver shapes, often with a hammered or brushed finish, and I use gold accents to enhance an otherwise neutral design. I'm particularly interested in building chains that combine metal and gemstones, using a combination of woven and joined links.
I'm fascinated by the color and properties of colored gemstones. My designs feature cultured freshwater pearls in a variety of colors, as well as gemstones in a broad range of hues, such as peridot, garnet, citrine, topaz, and tanzanite to name a few. When I'm creating a piece, it's amazing how just switching the colored gemstones changes a piece completely. I'm working towards a GIA graduate gemologist diploma.
